"Welcome to eXate's Global Data Diaries. This week we will focus on the importance of Data Audits and some interesting articles regarding the same.

PETs are a disruptive set of methods and approaches which, when combined with policies and business frameworks, could allow data sharing that preserves the privacy, confidentiality, integrity and availability of data.

Data security is a major concern for businesses of all sizes. The concerns over security and privacy have increased considerably over the years, given the number of data breaches affecting companies, organisations, and even cities.

Most businesses value their data as an asset. While procuring data is important, understanding and auditing data is equally, if not even more, important. Data audits are vital, not just because of key business concerns. According to Gartner, more than 40% of all data and analytics projects will relate to some aspect of customer experience. Since business decisions are increasingly driven by analytics, it’s critical that teams have full confidence in their data. From a data privacy perspective, every business needs to understand their data to deploy the right kind of Privacy Enhancing Techniques or PET(s). For this, companies need to:

a) Map out where exactly the data is

b) Evaluate accuracy, breadth and consistency

c) Take a deep look at what data is available and evaluate the quality of the data periodically.

A few areas to focus on, while conducting data audits are:

a) User access

b) Security and privacy vulnerabilities

c) Data Quality, Accuracy and Relevance

d) How up to date the data is

e) Regulation(s) Compliance.

A thorough understanding of the existing data will help companies orchestrate their preventive and reactive security strategy better. At eXate, we deploy a combination of PETs based on the complete understanding of a client’s data profile for a more robust and resilient security and privacy system. Read more about us here! Data Auditing

Data auditing is the assessment of data for quality throughout its lifecycle to ensure its accuracy and efficacy for specific usage. Data performance is measured and issues are identified for remediation. Data auditing results in better data quality, which enables enhanced analytics to improve operations.
